Saint John Energy Headquarters

From former brewery brownfield to a utility's new home.

We cleared the brownfield questions with a Phase I ESA, designed the mechanical and electrical systems, and managed construction of the utility's offices, stores, shops and garage.

Saint John Energy Headquarters

Founded in 1922, Saint John Energy distributes power to the City of Saint John and maintains substations, transformers, poles and feeder lines across it. To centralize equipment storage and house its staff, the utility built a new headquarters in west Saint John on a brownfield site.

Clearing the site’s history

Our Phase I Environmental Site Assessment established that, although the property had been a brewery, all materials had been cleaned up during demolition and there were no environmental concerns.

Designing and building it

Working with BGHJ Architects, we designed the mechanical systems (HVAC, plumbing and building management) and electrical systems (power distribution, communications, lighting, emergency power, fire and security) for a facility that includes offices, a public payment centre, equipment stores, maintenance shops and an equipment garage with quick highway access for crews. Our team then oversaw construction management. Design began in the fall of 2006 and the building was occupied in September 2008.
