Bio-Resources engineering

Engineering for the industries that work with living things.

Aquaculture, fisheries, food processing and agriculture: site selection, moorings, process design, wastewater, gear design and feasibility studies.

Overview

New Brunswick's aquaculture industry is worth close to $1.

4 billion a year, and we have been engineering for it, and for fisheries, food processors and farms, since 1989. Bio-resources engineering is an uncommon specialty that combines biology, hydrodynamics, process and structural engineering, and we have practised it continuously for more than three decades.

Tools we use: Hydrodynamic and mooring analysis · ArcGIS · process modelling

Aquaculture

  • Site selection, evaluation and inspection
  • Marine containment and mooring design
  • Hatchery, water supply and saltwater system design
  • Wastewater treatment design and assessment
  • New species development and research planning
  • Technical and operational due diligence

Fisheries & processing

  • Wharf assessment and design
  • Fishing gear design and derelict gear retrieval
  • Equipment and plant process design
  • Post-harvest handling
  • Processing waste characterization and treatment

Planning

  • Economic feasibility studies
  • New enterprise and operations planning
  • Industry infrastructure assessments
  • Greenhouse gas and energy assessments for certification

Common questions

Things clients ask our bio-resources team.

What is bio-resources engineering?
Engineering applied to industries based on living resources, such as aquaculture, fisheries, food processing and agriculture. It spans site selection, structures and moorings, process and wastewater design, and feasibility.
Can you support ASC or other certification?
Yes. We completed a seven-facility greenhouse gas assessment that supported Aquaculture Stewardship Council certification for a Nova Scotia salmon site.
Do you work outside Atlantic Canada?
Yes. Our bio-resources work has included an inland fisheries project in Sri Lanka and a global aquaculture due-diligence exercise across North America, South America, Central America and Europe.
